Night of Power - Lailatul Qadr
It is related that Imam Shaafi'ee رحمه الله said that it (Lailatul Qadr) should be sought on the 21st and the 23rd nights. He said in his early days (qadeem):
I consider - and Allah Ta'aala knows best - the strongest Ahadith in this regard referring to the 21st and 23rd nights. It is the night on which Sayyiduna Ali ibn Abi Taalib رضي الله عنه passed away. It also occurred on the 17th, 24th and 27th nights.
It is related that Sayyiduna Ali رضي الله عنه and Abdullah ibn Mas'ood رضي الله عنه said that it should be sought on the 21st and 23rd nights.
Another opinion of Imam Shaafi'ee رحمه الله is that it is most likely to be on the 23rd night. This is the opinion of the people of Madeenah. Imam Sufyaan As-Sauri رضي الله عنه narrated it from the people of Makkah and Madeenah. It is related that Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas رضي الله عنه and Sayyidah Aa'isha رضي الله عنها were from among those who used to awaken their families on this night. This is the opinion of Imam Makhool رحمه الله
Rushdeen ibn Sa'ad رحمه الله narrates from Zuhra ibn Ma'bad رحمه الله who said:
I was in need of a compulsory bath in the land of the enemy while I was out at sea on the 23rd night of Ramadhan. I went to take a bath but fell into the water. I found that the [ocean] water was sweet. I then called out to my companions informing that I was in sweet water.
Imam ibn Abdul Barr رحمه الله said:
This night [23rd] is known as the night of Al-Juhaneeyy in Madeenah - in referance to Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Anees رضي الله عنه [Al-Juhaneeyy] whom the Messenger of Allah صلي الله عليه وسلم ordered to engage in night worship on this night.
Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Anees رضي الله عنه narrates that the Messenger of Allah صلي الله عليه وسلم said with regard to the Night of Power:
I saw myself prostrating in mud on the morning following it. The Messenger of Allah صلي الله عليه وسلم turned around after the fajr salah of the 23rd night and there were traces of mud on his forehead.
Imam Saeed ibnul Musayyib رحمه الله narrates:
The Messenger of Allah صلي الله عليه وسلم was with a group of his companions when he said:
Should I tell you about the night of Power? They said: Indeed, Omessenger of Allah! He remained silent for some time and said: I asked you something just now, and I knew it at that time. But now I have been made to forget it. Do you remeber that day when we were at such and such place [referring to a battle which they fought], what night was it? They said: We travelled and then we returned. All the people then said that it was the 23rd night. Narrated by Imam Abdur Razzaq رحمه الله in his book.
